Precision 24-bit analog-to-digital converters, the ADS1232 and ADS1234 (ADS123x), are available (ADCs). The ADS123x offers a full front-end solution for bridge sensor applications such as weigh scales, strain gauges, and pressure sensors thanks to its low-noise programmable gain amplifier (PGA), precision delta-sigma ADC, and internal oscillator. A differential input multiplexer (MUX) may receive two (ADS1232) or four (ADS1234) inputs. A temperature sensor is also built inside the ADS1232 to track outside temperatures. The low-noise PGA supports fullscale differential inputs of 2.5 V, 1.25 V, 39 mV, or 19.5 mV and has configurable gains of 1, 2, 64, or 128.
The delta-sigma ADC offers two data rates: 10 SPS (offering 50-Hz and 60-Hz rejection) and 80 SPS, with a maximum effective resolution of 23.5 bits. The internal oscillator of the ADS123x or an external oscillator or crystal can be used to clock the device. The ADS123x can be powered down entirely or placed in a low-power standby mode, and offset calibration is done as needed. Simple pin-driven control is used to run the ADS123x; no digital registers need to be programmed. The MSP430 and other microcontrollers receive data output through a two-wire serial interface that is connected directly to them.
